“When you have no right to choose, you are a puppet dancing on the stage.
When you have no right to choose, you are a wind-up toy soldier.
When you have no right to choose, your goodness and badness are both only tools manipulated by the wire-pullers”

When we’ve learnt to think, perhaps the first and the heaviest question we ask is: who dominates our lives, the god, the society, the life itself, or ourselves? Or else all of them can be answers?

This question can never be solved, but nonetheless we never cease the conjecture of real life. We struggle to be free, to conquer fate. However, we finally find out that we are just that tiny. What can we do then?

  ‘It was me.’

Alex talked to the camera sitting at a bar, holding a glass of drugged milk, his eyes full of presumptuousness and evil. His and his three droogs were one of the typical vicious young gangs of the day. He committed all sorts of crimes, stole things, beat up old drunkard, drove desperately against the traffic, broke into houses and did violation to women. He even usually hit his friends to ensure his place in the group.

He was free, like he said, ‘If you need a car, you tow away one under the tree.’

But once, Alex accidentally killed a woman and became a prisoner. The jail wasn’t edifying at all, being in the human zoo for two years until the new government took office. For more prison rooms for political criminals, the new Cabinet Minister proposed a treatment to ‘reform’ the prisoner and chose Alex the experimental article. The doctor forced him to watch violence video everyday, with his body injected of drug. After two week suffering, he was totally ‘cured’. All things related to violence and crime could make him suck and afflicted to death. He was a freeman again, a good man, who could not fight. The society rejected him and the people who he bullied before revenged against him, but facing the outrage he had nothing to do. The former prisoner became a victim, so people started to doubt the treatment. As a result, to redeem government’s reputation, the Cabinet Minister turned Alex back to the vicious boy with a psychology doctor. At last, the psychology doctor said: ‘You are getting better.’

Before ‘A Clockwork Orange’, I regard movie as a means of entertainment. No matter it is comedy, love story, action film or thriller, people pay for the ticket for relaxation. But this one surprised me.

The picture and cutting was so weird because Stanley used colors that shape sharp contrast. The floors were black and white; actors wore red clothes and green wig; and Alex and his friends all dressed in strange costumes like those on the circus. The dialogue was even more grotesque, including beautiful parallelism resembled to Shakespeare’s works. Furthermore, Stanley turned the repulsive violent scenes into a feast for eyes, like a kind of dance with classic music on the background. But most importantly, Stanley Kubrick, the director of this movie, planted a subversive idea in my mind.

All those images haunted in my mind after the movie. The director invested all these efforts to get audience to think. It challenged people’s idea of free will and determinism. A young criminal became a tool for the government to maintain figure. Wasn’t it an absolute satire? Everybody has to live in fixed manners and principles. If someone cannot choose to be good or bad, he/she doesn’t enjoy human rights anymore.

‘Choice!’ the father shouted to the crowd. ‘The boy had no choice, had he?’

Being good or being bad is both choices, a kind of entitlement through birth that cannot be deprived. People can be taught and urged to be good, but no one can force them to do so. After aversion therapy, Alex became a virtuous man, but in the meantime his free will has been curtailed for the good of society.

When you have no right to choose, you are a puppet dancing on the stage.
When you have no right to choose, you are a wind-up toy soldier.
When you have no right to choose, your goodness and badness are both only tools manipulated by the wire-pullers
When you are controlled by politics, social ideology, sense morality and value, even religion and belief or any other kinds of mental controlling tools, you are not a real man. You are merely a CLOCKWORK ORANGE.
